Dorm move-in inventory checklist for roommates

Moving into a dorm is easier when everyone can answer three questions: what arrived, who owns it, and where it lives. Use this checklist while you unpack, not after the room fills with boxes.

Before move-in

  • Make one shared list for the room.
  • Mark who brings each shared item.
  • Separate personal items from items everyone can use.
  • Photograph serial numbers and receipts for electronics you want to document.

Unpack one zone at a time

Sleep

  • Sheets and pillowcases
  • Pillows and blanket
  • Mattress protector
  • Laundry bag

Study

  • Laptop and charger
  • Power strip, if residence rules allow it
  • Desk lamp
  • Headphones
  • Course supplies

Shared kitchen

  • Mugs, plates, and cutlery
  • Food containers
  • Kettle or coffee maker, if residence rules allow them
  • Snacks and pantry basics
  • Cleaning supplies

Bathroom

  • Towels
  • Shower sandals
  • Toiletries
  • First-aid supplies

Storage

  • Under-bed bins
  • Seasonal clothing
  • Luggage
  • Sports gear

Use three labels

For each item, record:

  1. Owner:the person who brought it.
  2. Sharing:personal, shared freely, or ask first.
  3. Location:a specific shelf, drawer, bin, or hook.

This prevents duplicate purchases and makes move-out easier because ownership is already clear.

Do a ten-minute room check

Each roommate picks one zone and records the items in it. Add a photo only when it helps identify the item. For supplies, record quantity or mark them as running low. Finish by listing anything that is still missing.
